30 lifestories, remembering parks
30 lifestories – remembering parks is a meaningful exhibition that enables singaporeans to recapture memories of times spent in their many parks and gardens. Singapore furniture industries council and national parks board (nparks) approached nextofkin creatives to breathe new life to pruned tree logs salvaged and collected from singapore’s garden city. Digging into our own memories of parks, we designed and developed the fallen logs piece of public seating furniture.
With the fallen trees and branches laying in our nature trails, it forms part of the landscape and the hiking Experience. We want to change how a fallen branch is perceived and not deemed useless once separated from the tree. To give the log a new life and to serve a purpose, we created a structurally sound piece of organic park furniture. Starting with the solid, we sliced the trunk into singular hexagonal structures – this particular Construction technique works through compression, the more you compress the structure the stronger it gets – in turn allowing the function to drive the form.
